Here are some principles that our elected officials in Raleigh should try to follow:
CONTROL SPENDING AND LOWER TAXES
Allowing working people to keep more of their earnings will create growth, opportunity, and jobs.
- Implement zero-based budgeting.
- Enact spending caps legislation to limit the increase in state spending to the rate of population growth and inflation.
- Lower the tax burden on people and businesses.
- Privatize government operations where feasible.
- Require a three-fifths vote for any future tax increases.
IMPROVE EDUCATION
We must make sure that our children have access to the best education opportunities available.
- Remove the cap on charter schools.
- Allow tax credits for parents to place their child in a private/home school.
- Channel more resources into the classroom where they are needed.
- Work to make education less bureaucratic.
REFORM GOVERNMENT
We must reform government to give greater control to the people and less control to politicians.
- Require openness and transparency in the preparation of the state budget and other legislation.
- Allow legislators enough time to read, understand, and debate a bill before voting on it.
- End gerrymandering and reform the redistricting process to produce fair, compact, apolitical districts.
- Enact term limits for leadership positions to prevent politicians from gaining too much power.
IMPROVE OUR JUSTICE SYSTEM
The goal of the justice system must be to protect and serve our citizens.
- Enact tort reform to reign in outlandish verdicts and costs.
- Lower the cost of prisons. Explore the idea of contracting out the operation of prisons.
- Provide law enforcement with the necessary resources and authority to confront illegal immigration.
PROTECT PROPERTY RIGHTS
Property rights are an essential part of a free society.
- Enact a Constitutional Amendment that bans eminent domain for private use and economic development.
- Oppose forced annexation by allowing citizens in the affected area to have a vote and/or representation from County Commissioners.
